Terry Fox Run 2007

The morning after dinner at Tommi and Monica's, I woke up thinking that perhaps Amaretto shots to cap off the evening were an unfortunate choice. At 7h30am I leapt out of bed, jumped onto a motorcycle and was off to the races.

The Terry Fox Run in Hanoi raises money for cancer research in Vietnam and is the 4th largest organized Terry Fox Run in the world, outside of Canada. I remember my parents taking me to see Terry Fox dip his artificial leg into the Pacific Ocean on the waterfront near Mile 0 on Vancouver Island when I was younger. Years later in Hanoi, that memory came flooding back to me.

I was astonished to see the turn-out in Hanoi. A few thousand Vietnamese showed up early on Sunday morning, doning red maple leaf baseball caps and Terry Fox water-based tattoes. There was a trio of karaoke singers warming up the crowd with choreographed hip-dislocating renditions of Shakira songs, a speech made by our Ambassador and recognition of the corporate sponsors. All in all, a wonderful tribute to a courageous Canadian.

It reminded me that although we may go about our business quietly, we actually really do make a difference abroad.
